Flock of DodosFrom Evolution to Unintelligent Design

SPECIAL GUEST CO-HOST: Thenmozhi Soundararajan

With the defeat of Intelligent Design in a Dover, Pennsylvania courtroom two years ago, proponents of the belief are not giving up. The Discovery Institute has recently published the first so-called Biology textbook that prominently presents what is deemed by the authors’ as an “inquiry based” approach to the teaching of evolution. According to the book’s website, the text titled, “Explore Evolution: The Arguments For and Against Neo-Darwinism,” is ideal for Biology teachers in college and high school alike. Critics of the textbook say that it belongs to the long tradition of creationist literature and that it is a sophisticated way to bring ID into public classrooms nationwide. Legal debates surrounding evolution may lie in the future as Texas Governor Rick Parry appointed Don McLeroy over the summer to be the new chairman of the Texas State Board of Education. McLeroy, a Republican, has campaigned in the past for Biology textbooks to include dissenting views on evolution such as those now presented by the Discovery Institute’s recent publication. As the US’ peculiar culture war shows no signs of slowing down, a new documentary, “Flock of Dodos,” tackles the Evolution vs. ID debate in an entertaining and humorous way.
