Healthcare Horrors to Doctor’s Confessions
The Democratically-controlled Congress failed yesterday to overturn President Bush’s veto of a bill that would expand SCHIP insurance to four million children. Supporters of the health bill fell 13 votes shy of the two-thirds majority needed to override the president’s veto. The SCHIP bill that was defeated would have increased tobacco taxes to fund an additional 35 billion dollars to expand the program to cover 10 million children as opposed to the 6.6 million currently enrolled. In the wake of yesterday’s vote, the White House has called for a comprise, as Democrats promised that new legislation would be ready in two weeks. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made the demand that ten million children be insured be non-negotiable. Though public opinion polls showed majority support for SCHIP expansion, Republican lawmakers campaigned against it saying that it would be the first step towards socialized medicine. Republican Congressman Dave Camp said that Democrats “want what Hillary Clinton called for in 1994, the first step toward government run insurance for all.” The ideological divide over the current political battle over SCHIP has confirmed what some analysts say is a debate over the role of government.
