How the Government Created Homelessness
| the entire program
GUEST: Gerado Gomez, Homelessness Activist
Project 50 is the name of a new homeless program that is expected to be approved by Los Angeles County supervisors. Though details of the project have yet to be finalized, its stated objective is to assist fifty of the most vulnerable homeless persons in downtown LA’s skid row. Caseworkers will then have 100 days to move the identified persons into apartments and help them gain access to vital support services. The fifty persons would be selected on the basis of a vulnerability index determined by caseworker surveys of skid row. Critics of Project 50 say that its scope is too since Los Angeles has an estimated 70,000 homeless people. The proposed plan comes on the heels of a failed one-hundred million dollar homeless initiative approved by city supervisors last year. As Project 50 seeks approval, homeless advocates are planning a local action this weekend. “How the Government Created Homelessness” is an event supported by numerous grassroots organizations that seeks to illustrate government mismanagement of funds created the problem of homelessness.
