Shadow Report on US Racism Paints a Stark Picture
| the entire program
GUEST: Margaret Huang, Director of the US Program, Global Rights
Coinciding with International Human Rights Day, a coalition of more than 250 social justice organizations released a shadow report on discrimination in the United States. Prepared by the activist umbrella group, U.S. Human Rights Network, the study is intended to be a rebuttal to a U.S. State Department report submitted to the United Nations’ Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination last April. The US Human Rights Network says that the State Department in effect whitewashed the problem of discrimination in the US by misrepresenting data while ignoring glaring racial disparities. In contrast, the alternative shadow report offers a comprehensive analysis of discrimination in the areas of housing, health care, prisons, education and voting rights. This coordinated response to the Bush Administration has been submitted to the same U.N. committee that is set to review the government’s report on discrimination next year.
