Going Green: Everything’s Cool / Energy Crossroads
Twelve major corporations signed a declaration today with the World Wide Fund for Nature, pledging to help fight global warming. The Tokyo Declaration as it’s called, includes companies like Sony, Nokia, Nike, and Hewlett-Packard and calls for more than a 50 percent cut in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This is still no where near enough, according to most scientists studying the issue. But it’s a small start. The United Nations General Assembly is in its second day of climate change talks and is hearing from many small and impoverished nations that are already suffering massive land loss from global warming. Meanwhile, here in the US, scientists at Oregon State University studying dead zones off the coasts of Oregon and Washington have concluded that warm waters as a result of global warming is to blame for the mass death of marine life.
It is the most urgent issue facing the planet and here in the US, Americans and our lifestyles are the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, discussion of climate change barely permeates the mainstream media, or the presidential debates.
Today we feature two of the best documentaries we could find on the issue of global warming, that not only sound the alarm but offer solutions for change.
Everything’s Cool is an award winning documentary about the debate on global warming in the United States and the deep chasm between scientific understanding and political action. Available for a pledge of $70.
Energy Crossroads is also an award winning documentary about the US appetite for fossil fuels and it’s impact on the planet. The film focuses on alternative renewable sources of energy and how technology already exists to take us into a greener era. Available for a pledge of $80.
