Accountability Sought in the Death of Michael Cho
| the entire program
GUEST: Albert Shin, with the group, Justice for Michael Cho, and childhood friend of Michael Cho
Last Thursday, former and current UCLA students, and members of the Korean American community attended a candlelight vigil in memory of alumnus Michael Cho. The former bruin arts graduate was gunned down on New Years Eve 2007 by two La Habra police officers. Responding to a vandalism call, the officers arrived at a liquor store where they encountered Cho. Police claim that Cho was holding a tire iron and threatened them. According to a store surveillance tape, the situation turned deadly in less than a minute – Michael Cho’s family claims he was shot at least ten times. The surveillance tape does not show the actual shooting, but that hasn’t stopped many angry members of the Korean American community from saying that the police overreacted. Demanding accountability in the death of Michael Cho, hundreds have protested outside of La Habra’s city hall and have appealed for a federal investigation into his death. The twenty-five year old man had plans to enter graduate school at Yale to eventually become a college professor.
