Meera SimhanGUESTS: Meera Simhan, writer and performer, Shishir Kurup, writer, composer, director and actor

“Miss India America 2008,” is a coming-of-age story about growing up Indian in Orange County. Written and performed by Meera Simhan, this one-woman play chronicles the formative years of a second generation South Asian girl. Directed by Shishir Kurup, “Miss India America 2008,” takes the audience through a search for identity and authenticity caught between traditional cultural values and the white world of suburbia. The tragicomic performance, told with wit and humor, deals with issues such as sexuality, the beauty pageant world, and immigration. Ultimately, Simhan’s character in the play must travel abroad in her voyage towards understanding her own womanhood. Excerpts of “Miss India America” were showcased last year to rave reviews, but the play is premiering in its entirety for the first time at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica this weekend.
