Local Activists Look Back Over 5 Years of Peace Vigils
| the entire program
GUESTS: Linda Krausen (South Pasadena), Ross Plesset (Eagle Rock, Highland), Anime Nelson (Burbank), local activists involved in peace vigils in Southern California
Yesterday hundreds of demonstrations, vigils, and acts of civil disobedience took place across the country to protest the Iraq war. In San Francisco 150 people were arrested for blocking traffic and various other acts of civil disobedience throughout the city. In Washington DC thousands of people marched, confronted the IRS, and also blocked traffic, resulting in 60 arrests. This past weekend, thousands of people in Los Angeles gathered in Hollywood to protest the Iraq war. But many community activists here in the Southland have been showing up on street corners in their neighborhoods for 5 years holding signs and keeping their disgust with the war visible. Here on Uprising we’ve been announcing these vigils from the start, and have continued to do so at the urging of listeners. Southern California’s “peace-vigilers” include teachers, parents, working people, retired people, long-time activists and new activists. Today we’ll hear from three such organizers who have dedicated their activism to protesting the Iraq war on street corners in their neighborhoods each week.
