LA’s Bold New Water Strategy: Will Angelinos Drink It Up?
| the entire program
GUEST: David Nahai, chief executive and general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined the Department of Water and Power last week in unveiling a new 20 year plan to conserve water in the city. The demand for water is expected to increase 15% by 2030. The new plan calls for serious water conservation including the first real enforcement of water restrictions in the city since the early 1990s. More controversially, LADWP’s plan includes a water recycling method, once opposed by the mayor as unsafe, but now championed due to the dire needs facing the city. LADWP is the nation’s largest municipal utility, sourcing 11% of the city’s water supply from the San Fernando Groundwater Basin.
