Global Warming, Capitalism, and Our Way of Life

Record breaking storms this past month have caused floods in Iowa and five other states forcing thousands from their homes and killing at least 22 people across the mid-west. The rising Mississippi River broke through a levee yesterday, forcing authorities to rescue about a half-dozen people by helicopter, boat and four-wheeler as floodwaters moved south into Illinois and Missouri. The village of Oakville in Iowa, just north of Burlington, has been submerged under an estimated 13 feet of water. The floods are expected to increase already soaring food prices. The 2008 tornado season is already the deadliest in a decade, and could shape up as the deadliest on record. When the corporate media covers these and other stories about hurricanes and extreme weather patterns, the larger context of climate change as a cause is never cited. Scientists the world over agree that human-caused warming of the planet is causing more extreme weather patterns.

The 11th Hour

The 11th Hour is a brand new documentary about global warming. This captivating documentary explores the perilous state of our planet, and the means by which we can change our course. Contributing to this crucial film are noted politicians, scientists and other ambassadors for the importance of a universal ecological consciousness.

The Enemy of Nature/A Really Inconvenient Truth

Capitalism, with its unrelenting pressure to expand, is unreformably destructive to ecologies. Here, Joel Kovel argues against the reigning orthodoxy that there can be no alternative to the capitalist system,on the grounds that submission to it is suicidal as well as unworthy of human beings. In this revolutionary indictment of capitalism, Joel Kovel criticizes its unrelenting pressure to expand, and its destructiveness toward ecology. Kovel also criticizes existing ecological politics for their evasion of capital, and advances a vision of ecological production as the successor to capitalist production.

This Brave Nation

A kind of “living history” project composed of short videotaped conversations, This Brave Nation brings together the most intelligent, passionate and creative voices of one generation with the activists, journalists and artists of the next to dialogue on loves, lives, politics and history. Each discussion will be produced as both a five-minute video and a thirty-minute mini-documentary, which will be collected in a DVD box set. Interviews feature Naomi Klein, Tom Hayden, Dolores Huerta, Bonnie Raitt, Pete Seeger, and others.

A People’s History of American Empire

Since its landmark publication in 1980, A People’s History of the United States has had six new editions, sold more than 1.7 million copies, become required classroom reading throughout the country, and been turned into an acclaimed play. More than a successful book, A People’s History triggered a revolution in the way history is told, displacing the official versions with their emphasis on great men in high places to chronicle events as they were lived, from the bottom up.

Now Howard Zinn, historian Paul Buhle, and cartoonist Mike Konopacki have collaborated to retell, in vibrant comics form, a most immediate and relevant chapter of A People’s History: the centuries-long story of America’s actions in the world. Narrated by Zinn, this version opens with the events of 9/11 and then jumps back to explore the cycles of U.S. expansionism from Wounded Knee to Iraq, stopping along the way at World War I, Central America, Vietnam, and the Iranian revolution. The book also follows the story of Zinn, the son of poor Jewish immigrants, from his childhood in the Brooklyn slums to his role as one of America’s leading historians.

Running the program the second hour to censor Amy Goodman’s interview with Ralph Nader has got to one of the stupidest things KPFK has ever done.

Don’t the idots know that Southern California is a national center of Ralph Nader supporters, and many of them donate to KPFK.

After this, many of them are going to say not ten cents to KPFK after this.

We need regime change at KPFK.

Sonali, what happened to the comment posted here earlier?

You think censoring people will accomplish something?

Yes it will. I am not giving ten cents to KPFK!

    Dear Foo,

Your comments were just approved on our website. Sorry we didn’t get to them soon enough – we often get inundated with spam and hatemail and so we moderate all comments – all the legitimate comments, critical or not, like yours, are always approved, unless they include hate speech.

Let me explain about the two hour Uprising broadcast. Actor and activist Tim Robbins had offered to come in studio on Wednesday to help us fundraise on the air. He could only come in at 8:30 but could stay until 10 am. So the KPFK management asked me to do a two hour broadcast (Amy’s show at 9 is pre-taped so we couldn’t have him on D Now live). We were excited and prepared long and hard for that broadcast.

At 7:15 am Wednesday morning Tim Robbins’ assistant called me and cancelled because Tim was not feeling well. As you can imagine I was so disappointed. We weighed whether or not to go ahead with the 2-hour broadcast, and, in light of the poor performance of the drive, decided to try a live shot with an hour of fundraising. You can certainly argue that that decision may not have been the best one. Trust me, it was NO fun for me to spend two hours on the air fundraising. I was exhausted and nearly in tears at the end of it. I had no idea that Ralph Nader was even on Democracy Now. And in fact, I would love to get Nader on the air and have tried in the past. I’m sure I’ll be able to arrange a phone interview with him some time this year.

So, please believe me, this was no conspiracy to silence Nader.

Thank you so much for listening and I hope you will reconsider financially supporting this incredibly important but financially struggling radio station.

    Yours sincerely,

    Sonali Kolhatkar
