Greens Pick McKinney for President
| the entire program
GUEST: Scott McLarty, Media Coordinator of the Green Party
Former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney won the Green Party nomination this weekend at the convention in Chicago. She picked hip hop artist and activist Rosa Clemente as her Vice Presidential running mate. McKinney received 313 out of 532 votes cast on Saturday. She ran against three other candidates, Jesse Johnson, Kent Mesplay, and Kat Swift. This is the first time that McKinney is running on a Green Party ticket – she had formerly served with the Democratic Party as the first black woman to represent the state of Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives. After six terms in office, she lost her bid for reelection in 2006. McKinney has been a controversial figure within the Democratic Party, openly supporting Palestinian rights and calling for an independent investigation of the 9-11 attacks.
