The Panama Canal by Subversive Historian Gabriel San Roman
Ninety-four years ago on this day in people’s history, the U.S. constructed Panama Canal officially opened. On August 15th, 1914, the S.S. Ancon cargo ship was the first vessel to pass through the man made structure linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The United States had originally been committed to building the structure in Nicaragua, when Wall Street investors in the bankrupt French Panama Canal Company convinced lawmakers otherwise. In order to begin construction, the U.S. needed a treaty with Colombia as Panama was at the time a province of the South American nation. The Colombian government refused to sign a treaty with the United States and President Roosevelt responded by sending U.S. warships to back an orchestrated insurrection that led to the independent republic of Panama. Eighty-five years later, the U.S. formally turned control of the canal to Panama in 1999 to the objection of some lawmakers!
I guess it must really be hard to let go of something you had to create an entire country for!
Let’s keep it real! For Uprising, this is your truth professa saying it’s no mystery why they conceal our history!
