Libertarian Party Presidential Candidate Bob Barr
| the entire program
Libertarian Party candidate for President Bob Barr showed up at the Republican National Convention last week to mingle with his old friends in the GOP. Barr, who was a Republican Congressman from 1995-2003, was known as one of the most conservative members of Congress with one paper describing him as “the idol of the gun-toting, abortion fighting, IRS hating hard right wing of American politics.” Barr is best known for his role in the Clinton impeachment trial, but his vehement criticism of the Bush administration’s policies on civil liberties and privacy issues after the September 11th attacks began his separation from the Republican Party. He has changed his position on a number of issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage in a Libertarian direction and nearly two years ago he became a self-described card carrying Libertarian. He announced his presidential candidacy with the Libertarian Party earlier this year and a study found him polling at 6% of the national vote.

This guy’s a fake; i.e how can someone who supported a constitutional amendment defining marriage qualify as libertarian
I am glad to see Bob Barr change his mind about important issues. Since every one of us starts life at square one, with our moral development passing through subsequent stages, it would be only the stagnant, non-developing person whose mind never changed on issues.
I am actually very suspect of politicians whose positions remain exactly the same.
Beil:
“Libertarian” is a very substantial quadrant of the Nolan Chart. One is still a libertarian even if one occupies a position other than the uppermost pinnacle.
A conservative who had one liberal position would still be a conservative. A liberal who had a few conservative positions would still be a liberal….
There’s plenty of room for Barr. Don’t sweat it, especially since we are not winning anything any time soon.
