Muslim Progressive Voice Against Gay Marriage Ban
| the entire program
This November, Californian voters will be asked to consider a ballot proposition that would rescind the rights of same-sex couples to legally marry in the state. The latest poll figures indicate that Proposition 8 would fail with a growing majority of 55% of likely voters saying they would vote against the ban. The increased opposition over the past two months has coincided with the state Attorney General’s rewording of the initiative’s language in the wake of the California Supreme Court’s decision to allow same-sex marriage. The original description was a measure that “amends the California Constitution to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.†But this July, Jerry Brown rewrote the summary definition of Proposition 8 to state that it “eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry.†A lawsuit was immediately filed against the rewording. However a California Superior Court ruled in favor of the state Attorney General. As the first potential amendment in California’s Constitution to take away rights already granted, Proposition 8 has not found support from either Governor Schwarzenegger or Senator Diane Feinstein.
