Cesar Chavez Founds The National Farm Workers Association by Subversive Historian Gabriel San Roman

Forty-six years ago on this day in people’s history, labor leader Cesar Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association. On September 30th, 1962, after resigning from the Latino civil rights Community Service Organization, Chavez organized a convention in an abandoned theater in Fresno, California. It was there where the NFWA was born and would go on to organize strike and boycotts against agribusiness exploiters in the state. Three years after the formation of the NFWA, a grape strike would see the new labor organization join in solidarity with the Filipino American Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee. Realizing a common vision, the two would meld together in the summer of 1966 to form the influential United Farm Workers of America and would go onwards towards victory against the grape growers after five years of hard fought struggles.
