In the Midst of Election Excitement, Immigrants Fast for Rights
While all eyes have been on the elections, a group of immigrant rights activists have been fasting for three weeks at Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles demanding attention to the disappeared issue of immigration in the election. More than 150 immigrants have reportedly participated in the so-called “Fast for Our Future” for a few days at a time, while eight have fasted for the full 21 days until Election Day. They are demanding, among other things, the ICE raids that have devastated immigrant communities and caused mass trauma among families. Raul Anorve, Executive Director of IDEPSCA, the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California, is among the 8 who have continuously fasted. He spoke with independent journalist Fatima Mojaddidy recently. The protesters will march and end their fast today. For more information, visit www.idepsca.org, and www.therisemovement.org.
