Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?
| the entire program
Ever since President elect Barack Obama formally met with Senator Hillary Clinton last week, speculation has continued over whether she will be appointed as the US’s next Secretary of State, which is the top diplomatic post in the government. The Guardian Newspaper of London has reported that Obama’s former rival for the Democratic Presidential nomination plans to accept his invitation for the job. Before that can happen, however, the President-elect’s advisers are vetting the international buggb_options_separatesiness activities of former President Bill Clinton to ensure that there are no direct conflicts of interests should his wife be appointed to the position. By considering Senator Clinton for the position, Obama has to reconcile with a person he claimed to have major differences with on the issue of foreign policy during the primary election campaign. In trying to secure his party’s nomination, Obama had made repeated references to Senator Clinton’s 2002 vote to authorize President Bush to go to war against Iraq. It is that stance, alongside others, that has made speculation about a possible Secretary of State Hillary Clinton controversial to many progressive Democrats and grass roots activists that support Obama.
