Despite the fact that America is the birthplace of the Internet millions of Americans still fall on the wrong side of the “digital divide”. Here in California, 56% of all homes lack broadband access. Whereas most European countries and many Asian countries have universal and often free internet access. To remedy this, on Saturday Dec. 6, hundreds of Los Angeles residents are expected to gather to discuss the future of the Internet, and universal public internet access. There will be a town hall meeting sponsored by InternetforEveryone.org — a broad-based initiative by the media reform group Free Press, aimed at connecting every American to a fast, open and affordable Internet. This interactive event is the first in a nationwide series of gatherings to generate popular support for access to an open Internet as a basic right for all Americans. The town hall meetings are aimed at making sure free universal Internet access is a top priority of the Obama administration and the new Congress.
