The Roots of the Greek Revolt
The fatal police-shooting of a 15 year old boy in Greece earlier this month has sent shock waves throughout the country with thousands of mostly young people revolting. The protests began in an Athens district called Exarchia — described by one commentator in Spiegel as “a traditional haunt of artists, anarchists and left-wing intellectuals.” The protests then spread to most of the country and continue to this day. Shops have been vandalized, police stations and banks have been fire bombed, officers have been doused with red paint, and unions have initiated mass work stoppages. Police have responded with tear gas and flash grenades against demonstrators. There have been demonstrations in solidarity with the protesters in various European cities including London, Moscow, Paris, and Berlin. While the death of the school boy sparked off the protests, the main underlying issues facing Greeks, particularly youths, include government corruption and the poor state of the economy.

Iraqi Journalist Throws Shoes at Bush; Hailed As Hero
Bush’s farewell visit to Iraq and Afghanistan was marked by an incident that has taken the Arab and Muslim world by storm – the image of an Iraqi journalist who hurled his shoes at Bush. Muntadhar al-Zaidi, a 28 year old who attended the press conference shouted, “this is a farewell kiss, you dog. This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq,” as he hurled his shoes towards the President. Bush was quick to dodge, and though he missed his intended target , al-Zaidi’s gesture has resonated with millions of Iraqis who marched to demand his release from prison. The incident has had a wide impact, even inspiring an online game at sockandawe.com where players can throw their virtual shoe at Bush. There are multiple reports confirming that he was beaten while in jail and now faces a 15 year sentence for “committing “aggression against a president.”
GUEST: As’ad Abukhalil, author of several books on the Mideast including “The Battle for Saudi Arabia: Royalty, Fundamentalism, and Global Power,” Professor in the Department of Politics at California State University, Stanislaus. Abu Khalil’s blog is called the Angry Arab News Service online at angryarab.blogspot.com.

White Supremacists Infiltrate U.S. Army
As Barack Obama is set to be sworn in as the nation’s first African-American commander in chief, new evidence is suggesting that white supremacists are continuing to fill the ranks of the U.S. army. The ongoing economic recession has been openly cited by the Pentagon as a main reason why re-enlistments and new recruitments are up in 2008. However, in previous years the U.S. military struggled to find recruits and subsequently lowered their standards in an attempt to attract more potential enlistments. A new Intelligence Report filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center argues that white supremacist extremists are continually taking advantage of the situation to gain access to combat and other forms of training. Two years ago, a similar report by the group was followed by congressional demands for action to be taken to ensure extremists weren’t within the ranks of the military. No redress has come from the Defense Department since that time and new reports from the FBI and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Army shows that infiltration is still occurring and indeed may be growing.
