Clinton Promises “Smart Power” as Secretary of State
| the entire program
Senator Hillary Clinton faced a relatively friendly crowd at her Senate confirmation hearing yesterday. As Secretary of State, Clinton will be the principal spokesperson for the President on US foreign policy. The hearings were framed by the phrase “Smart Power” which Clinton described as diplomacy being at the “vanguard of foreign policy.” While Clinton’s positions on the use of diplomacy and the military were mostly agreeable to the committee, it was her husband’s foundation activities that most concerned the Senators. Clinton was repeatedly questioned on the transparency of international donations made to the foundation run by former president Bill Clinton. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which questioned her for five hours yesterday, is expected to confirm her soon.
