ObamaBarack Obama is Inaugurated as 44th President of the United States

Barack Hussein Obama was sworn in as 44th President, and first African American President of the United States on Tuesday January 20th in Washington DC where millions of Americans gathered to witness history. It was the biggest security event in American history with 40,000 military, civilian and private security officers on duty, roughly one for every 50 people in attendance. As former President George W Bush arrived at the capitol, there were reportedly a number of boos heard. According to a new study, Bush left office with the worst employment-growth record of any president since World War II. It was within that context that President Obama gave his inauguration speech, cautioning Americans of the struggle to come, but offering inspiration and hopeful words. Today we play you that historic inauguration speech followed by a recent talk by anti-racist activist and speaker Tim Wise.

Tim WiseTim Wise: Between Barack and a Hard Place

Much has been said in the aftermath of Obama’s election and inauguration about the state of America’s racial politics. African Americans, particularly of older generations, never thought they would live to see the day the US elected a black president. But what does Obama’s election mean about race-relations in the US? We spend the rest of the hour hearing from anti racist writer, activist, and educator, Tim Wise author of several books including White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son, and Speaking Treason Fluently: Anti-racist Reflections From an Angry White Male. His forthcoming book is called Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama. Actor and activist Danny Glover has said that Wise’ book “provides an insightful and much needed lens through which we can begin to navigate this current stage in our ongoing quest for a more inclusive definition of who we are as a nation.” Tim Wise recently addressed an audience at All Saints Church in Pasadena, California.
