Despite Israel’s January 18th announcement that it would end the bombardment of Gaza, Israeli aircraft attacked two locations this morning. The government claimed the strikes were retaliation for rocket fire from Gaza yesterday. Still, mediators are trying to broker a long-term ceasefire as Israel gets ready to hold its national elections. The 22 day war, which followed a months-long embargo, killed over 1,300 Palestinians, hundreds of them children. Israel has justified its actions on the basis of rocket fire by Hamas. The United States, the main supplier of Israel’s weapons, has once more condoned the violence – neither out-going President Bush, nor incoming President Obama, denounced the attacks, even as international outrage grows. The Free Gaza movement, comprising international activists who break the siege of Gaza by sea, have succeeded in bringing several boat-loads of supplies into the territory. But Gaza remains essentially isolated, struggling to emerge from the wreckage of war.
Today we hear an analysis of the Israeli war on Gaza by legendary political commentator and writer, professor of linguistics at MIT, Noam Chomsky. On January 13th, Professor Chomsky addressed a packed audience in Cambridge, Massachusetts, about the crisis in Gaza, speaking for nearly an hour, followed by a question/answer session with the audience for another hour. The talk was captured on DVD by Roger Leisner of Radio Free Maine.
