Tsvangirai’s Wife Dies in Car Crash; Zimbabwe Crisis Continues
| the entire program
A car accident last week in Zimbabwe took the life of Susan Tsvangirai, the Prime Minister’s wife, and caused the PM himself some injury. A spokesperson for Tsvangirai’s party, Movement for Democratic Change, confirmed that a truck collided with the PM’s car just outside the capital, Harare. The tragedy comes only a month after Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and Mr. Tsvangirai joined forces in a power-sharing government under intense pressure from regional leaders to end the nation’s political crisis following a controversial election last year. Mr. Tsvangirai has been the victim of numerous arrests and beatings, and has even had his body guards killed. As yet it is not known whether the crash that killed his wife was an accident or deliberate. Meanwhile, as part of an international solidarity campaign called “Save Zimbawe Now!” South African political activist Nomboniso Gasa has just survived a three week water-only hunger strike. Ms. Gasa says she is “horrified that the South African government and international community are not adequately responding to the humanitarian crisis, torture and abuse of political detainees, and an economy spiraling out of control.”
