The Assassination of Emiliano Zapata

Back in the day on April 10th, 1919 Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata was assassinated. The plot to kill the influential leader was hatched by then-President Venustiano Carranza of Mexico who had come to see Zapata as a threat to the consolidation of his rule. Upholding the freedom of the peasantry as his supreme revolutionary objective, the Mexican general from the state of Morelos had always been a thorn in the side of the establishment. His Zapatistas rebels scored a decisive victory and helped topple the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz in the Mexican Revolution. When Francisco Madero became President and turned his back on just land reform, Zapata countered by authoring the famous Plan de Ayala calling him a traitor to the revolution. Carranza, fearing this authentic rebel, set a trap by having Zapata met with one of his colonels who posed as a defector.

Bullets may have riddled the chest of the revolutionary that fateful day, but unlike his adversaries, he did not live his lifetime on his knees.
