Guerilla Gardening: Resistance is Fertile
A barren traffic island on the corner of 40th and Broadway brought together a convergence of community members, high school students, and a film crew. Guerilla Gardening: Resistance is Fertile, is the title of a new documentary chronicling the efforts of South Central high school students to green their neighborhood. On March 13th Uprising hosted three of the so-called Guerilla Gardeners in our KPFK studios to publicize the “Big Dig” – a plan to plant hardy succulents on the corner of 40th and Broadway. In a nutshell, the event was a success and the plants were planted with the help of families and friends who showed up. But the city responded with typical bureaucratic heavy-handedness. Documenting the story of the young people and their “Big Dig” were film makers Mike Greischar & Thenmozhi Soundararajan. Their film, Guerilla Gardening: Resistance is Fertile, is debuting this Friday May 8th at 7:30pm at the Eileen L. Norris Cinema Theater, 3507 Trousdale Parkway in LA.
GUESTS: Thenmozhi Soundararajan and Mike Greischar, co-directors of the film, Blanca Perez aka Tree Hugger, Ruben Carrizosa aka Sorbis, with the South Central Resistance
