Budget Measures Fail, State Faces Crisis Again
California voters cast their ballots yesterday on a series of measures designed by lawmakers and Governor Schwarzenegger to close the $21 billion state budget gap. Measures 1A through 1E were all rejected by almost two thirds of voters. Only Proposition 1F, which would stop pay raises for legislators in times of deficit spending, passed by an overwhelming 74%. The state legislature and governor are now facing a task of closing the massive spending gap and education is once more likely to be on the chopping block. In anticipation, dozens of Los Angeles teachers have been protesting and committing acts of civil disobedience. More than 40 teachers were arrested last Friday including president of the United Teachers of Los Angeles, AJ Duffy. Meanwhile, in a high profile race to replace Hilda Solis’ Congressional seat representing the 32nd district in San Gabriel, Democrat Judy Chu garnered the most votes of all the candidates, beating State Senator Gil Cedillo 32 – 24%. However, as Judy Chu did not win an outright majority, she faces a run-off election on July 14th against Republican Betty Chu and Libertarian Christopher Agrella.
