KPFK Fund Drive – Day 9
Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music
Forty years ago this August, an estimated 3-500,000 people gathered in New York State for the Woodstock Music Festival. Dubbed as the biggest rock concert of its time, Woodstock showcased the best performers of “rock, folk, and progressive popular music” of the sixties. Furthermore, it came to symbolize 60’s hippie culture of “sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll.” Woodstock’s theme of peace and music, embodied the sixties social and political culture of its decade, including the African-American struggle for equality led by the Civil Rights Movement, along with a new wave of feminism that sparked Women’s Liberation, protests against the Vietnam War, and the Stonewall Riots that led to the Gay and Lesbian Movement. Alongside the nearly half million attendees, were a film crew with a monumental task of capturing the music and atmosphere on film. Michael Wadleigh’s epic documentary, Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music, released a year after the August 1969 event, captured an Oscar for best Documentary and broke new ground in the documentary genre. Now, the director’s cut of the film has been released as part of a limited release 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition. The 3 DVD set includes “Over 3 hours of Bonus Content Including Never-Before-Seen Performances” and features performances by: Richie Havens, Joan Baez, The Who, Sha-Na-Na, Joe Crocker, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Carlos Santana, Sly and the Family Stone and many more.
