‘Birther’ Controversy Exposes Ongoing American Racism

| the entire program

racistsA new survey has found that more than half of Republicans either think that President Obama was born outside the United States or doubt his actual birthplace. Some of these Americans, called ‘birthers’ have been making their case for Obama’s ineligibility to be President since before last year’s election. A lawyer named Orly Taitz even filed lawsuits and canvassed the country meeting with elected Republicans to convince them of her case. But several courts including the Supreme Court itself have thrown out all the lawsuits. Obama has made his Hawaii birth certificate available to the public and the Honolulu hospital where he was born has repeatedly confirmed his birthplace. Despite hard proof, the birthers have not disappeared. Rather their ranks have increased over the months, fueled in part by a so-called ‘birther’ bill sponsored by nine Republicans in Congress that would require any future presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States before running a campaign. Additionally, recent broadcasts by CNN anchor Lou Dobbs and Fox News’ Sean Hannity, have hurled the controversy from the margins of conspiracy theories into a national discussion in the mainstream media. Even though most reports in the media have thoroughly dismissed the birthers’ claims as illogical, irrational, and defiant of reality, very few have overtly linked this movement to a deep-seated, widely held collective racism that refuses to accept that a Black man is president of the United States.

There is nothing racist about wanting to know the truth about obama’s natural-born status.

I don’t trust ANY politician and almost no one in the media. I still want two answers.

    1) Why can’t we see his long-form? Obama knows that millions of citizens want to see it yet he continues to hide it. What/why is he hiding?

    and most disturbingly,

    2) Why don’t BHO’s supporters want to know the whole truth, especially since there’s a reward of $100,000 for proof that Obama is a “natural born” citizen of the United States.

OBAMA, STOP HIDING. SHOW US THE LONG FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE!!!!!

The real issue is that regardless of where Obama was born, he was a British citizen at birth thru his father as his citizenship was governed under the British Nationality Act of 1948. He admitted as much on his official Fight the Smears website. The question, to paraphrase from Leo Donofrio, Esq., is this: how can a natural born United States citizen be governed at birth by British/foreign citizenship law?

there is no racism involved, you are mistaken. the argument of racism is being used as a defence by those blindly in support of obama

no court has verified the facts surrounding obama’s eligibility. the court cases you mention were all thrown out due to “lack of standing” – essentially an indication that the american people do not have the legal status to ask for proof of claim that he is eligible, or hold him accountable for anything. doesnt that concern you?

what about the pledges of transparency? why wont he realise his records and instead is fighting for their non-disclosure in the courts?

if there is nothing to all this, obama can prove, yet he chooses not to and perpetuates the argument. name calling is no argument and exposes the fact their is no counter-argument.

    wakey wakey and good day.

I just wish those who think the “birthers” are crazy would take the time to read through the research they have been doing. I have been and there is enough substantial information to bring into question President Obama’s story. Those who say everything is just fine are closing their eyes to some obvious warning flags. Enough so that I would like to sell them the Brooklyn Bridge.

Racism? You gotta be crazy. Nothing about race.

    Obama is “Black”????

    Since when?

Oh yeah, he becomes “Black” when ever he is critizied so they can shout “racists”, just like Skippy Gates.

It isn’t “racist” to know that a person born to a British father could never be considered a natural born American citizen. Yes, he is a citizen, but not a natural born citizen.

Natural born = two citizen parents and born in US terrirtory, thus no allegence to any other country.

Obama simply does not qualify, and never can.

That is why they are agressivly trying to make the issue about “where” he was born, when in reality it doesn’t matter.

He could have been born in the Lincoln Bedroom and he still would not be a natural born citizen.

Of course the Constitution is just a damn piece of paper, right Obots?

Holy crap, look at her Twitter page.

    http://twitter.com/LilianaSegura

This is how she pitched this story to her followers:

“If you woke up thinking: What I need is a new take on the racist ‘birthers,’ I wrote this especially for you”

Nothing but PURE LIES AND PROPAGANDA.

You birthers are ridiculous. In the first place you contradict yourselves. First you say it’s all important to verify the birth certificate, then you say it (the authenticity of the birth certificate)really doesn’t matter after all (because the status of his father trumps the issue). Which is it? And if it doesn’t matter why do you make such a big deal about it? Why not just drop it and rely on the issue that really does (supposedly) matter?

As to this long form/short form nonsense, the state of Hawaii as a matter of policy issues the short form only in response to requests. And they have treated President Obama’s records the same way they treat everyone else’s — according to established procedures and the law. If you’re such sticklers on what’s legal and what’s not why are you expecting/demanding that the state of Hawaii abandon the rules and make an exception in this particular case?

In addition, the short form lists place of birth, which is the only bit of data relevant to this discussion. What? do you expect the long form is going to secretly list a different place of birth from the short form… and this is why they’re supposedly hiding it from us? What kind of sense does this make?

Oh, but I forgot, the birth certificate doesn’t really matter, right? So, why are we even talking about this? But then, of course, in reality it does matter because contrary to your half-baked beliefs if you’re born in any state of the U.S. you’re a citizen (regardless of the status of your father or any other consideration). This is based on the citizenship clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. You know, the very same Constitution you are supposedly fighting so hard to defend? And unfortunately for you and your irrational claims, the records that have been released by the Hawaii Dept. of Health in accordance with state policies and procedures confirms his place of birth as being in the State of Hawaii.

This entire line of questioning has already been debunked in numerous places, probably in the most thorough way at factcheck.org and at snopes.

Nick, your issue of dual citizenship was addressed at factcheck and snopes, and the simplest answer is that Obama was born in Hawaii, and that at the age of 21, he did not assert himself as a British or Kenyan Citizen. Therefore, when he became an adult, he was always a US natural born citizen.

ohdearyme, the reason the cases about this were thrown out was not because people don’t have the legal right to hold elected officials accountable. The cases were thrown out because they were specious and were based on misinterpretations of the law or on fantasy.

Obots, your posts are the funniest of all. As snopes points out, your entire line of reasoning is based on faulty logic. Look up their citations to the law. Obama actually is a natural born citizen because he was born in Hawaii and not naturalized at a later time.

I can understand criticism of Obama based on the facts of his conduct or the problems of his administration. But this kind of thing is as silly as most conspiracy theories around. It assumes that the state government of Hawaii is involved in a massive conspiracy, and that aged newspaper birth announcements were forged, etc.

Even if Obama were to produce this long-form certificate (and that after the appropriate officials in Hawaii have repeatedly confirmed that his papers are genuine and he was born there), the same “experts” who disputed the short form version would immediately declare the long form to be a forgery or another conspiracy.

It’s clear that Obama doesn’t answer this silliness for one of two reasons. Either he doesn’t feel like validating such a question with an answer (and in so doing he’d be opening himself to every ridiculous claim you can think of); or he is content to see the radical Right conspiracy theorists embarass and divide the Republicans. Either way, he benefits from staying away from this discussion.

And I’m not a supporter of Obama. I didn’t vote for him, based on his voting record in Congress and his relative inexperience. My vote went to Nader, as it has for the past three presidential elections, as a simple matter of honor and common sense. But this whole Birther silliness is a bit much to take.

Thank you Kevin and thank you William for expressing the sentiment of the majority of rational thinking Americans. I find it very difficult to argue with a birther because they refuse to listen to anything said to them – nothing will change their mind so nothing anyone says is important. You have succinctly expressed the facts and 2 days went by without refutation. Congrats.

John Gotti (1940-2002) A throwback to the old street smart gangsters of the days of Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky, John Gotti
seemed for a time to be untouchable by the hands of law enforcement.
He’s bouncing around on floor, did a casual triple full, and is the only guy so far to do something real on vault — a couple handspring double fronts, to be exact.
These two incidents are in reality patently meaningless.
