George Carlin – It’s Bad for Ya

There are seven words that no one can say on broadcast television or radio, considered too obscene by the Federal Communications Commission. We have the late comedian, writer, and rebel George Carlin and Pacifica Radio to thank for that. Upon Carlin performing his infamous routine “Seven Words You can’t Say on Television” on WBAI Pacifica Radio in New York in 1973, a complaint was filed by a parent, leading to Carlin’s work being the subject of a Supreme Court case, FCC vs. Pacifica, which then led to the banning of those seven words. Known as one of the best American comedians of all time, Carlin was placed second on the Comedy Central cable television network list of the 100 greatest stand-up comedians, ahead of Lenny Bruce and just behind Richard Pryor. He is known for hosting the first episode of Saturday Night Live and won five Grammy awards. George Carlin’s work was as characterized by his irreverence for government, politics, and religion, as his profanity. He died just over a year ago on June 22, 2008, at the age of 71. Just 4 days before he died, he was announced as the winner of the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor by the Kennedy Center.

One month before Carlin’s death, he filmed his fourteenth and final HBO special, with an hour of brand new material on issue like aging, death, patriotism, parenting, and of course politics.
