President Obama continued his efforts to sell his healthcare proposals to the American public on Sunday, appearing on 5 Sunday morning talk shows. Obama admitted that the health care fight had “humbled” him. His media blitz comes ahead of a critical week in the legislature on the healthcare reform battle. Max Baucus, the Blue-dog Democrat from Montana, who heads up the crucial Senate Finance Committee convene his committee tomorrow for three days of debate on his version of the bill. Not surprisingly, Baucus’ version does not include even a government-run insurance option to compete with the private insurance industry. It does require mandatory insurance for all, a windfall for the industry, and would allow for older Americans to be charged five times as much as younger Americans for insurance premiums. Single parents, under Baucus’ bill could be charged 80% more for insurance than a childless adult. Meanwhile, a new study based at Harvard university estimates that the number of Americans who die each year from lack of health insurance is more than double what was previously estimated. Nearly 45,000 Americans die each year from not having insurance. A state-by-state breakdown of the numbers reveals that California has the highest death-toll with more than 5000 uninsured people dying in this state each year.
