Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, and Francois Pienaar on “Invictus”
Directed by Clint Eastwood, “Invictus” is a new film set in post-apartheid Africa starring Morgan Freeman as President Nelson Mandela. Opening in Johannesburg yesterday, the film cinematically explores Mandela’s attempt to make the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa a moment of racial harmony. Having been imprisoned for twenty-seven years and labeled a “terrorist” for opposing apartheid, the newly elected President reached out and called for national unity as the nearly all-white South African rugby team was set to face off against New Zealand in the championship game. “Invictus,” which also stars actor Matt Damon as rugby team captain Francois Pienaar, opens to theaters across the United States on Friday. KPFK’s Thandisizwe Chimurenga attended the LA Press Junket for the film’s premiere and brings us the voices of Morgan Freeman, Francois Pienaar, and Matt Damon, who plays Pienaar.
