DOJ Finds Serious Flaws at Inglewood Police Department
Since 2008, the federal Department of Justice has undertaken a comprehensive review of the Inglewood Police Department here in Los Angeles County. It has found serious flaws in how the IPD oversees incidents involving the use of force, and how it responds to complaints against abusive officers. In 2008, Inglewood police shot and killed four people, three of whom were unarmed. Community outrage over that series of shootings, led to the federal civil rights review. Among those calling for the investigation was Congresswoman Maxine Waters. A Los Angeles Times investigative report in 2008 revealed that the shootings were part of a deadly pattern that dates back to at least 2003. The report by Jack Leonard and Victoria Kim details shocking abuses of many unarmed residents of Inglewood, such as being shot in the back and tasered in the genitals.
