Back in the day on January 14th, 1967, “A Gathering of the Tribes for a Human Be-In” took place in Northern California. The counter-culture gathering first announced on the cover of the San Francisco Oracle attracted tens of thousands to the city’s Golden Gate Park. The event had evolved from an earlier gathering called the “Love Pageant Rally” that narrowly focused on the banning of LSD as an illegal substance in 1966. The organizers of the “Be-In” had expanded horizons and hoped to bridge the gap that they saw in the youth movement between Berkeley style radicals and Haight-Ashbury style hippies. The effort to promote “a union of love and activism,” featured the participation of people like Allen Ginsburg, Dick Gregory, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Timothy Leary was also present and gave his famed “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out” speech. Popular bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane provided the psychedelic soundtrack.
The “Be-In” was considered a prelude to the Summer of Love that followed and reinforced counter-culture ideals in inspiring similar events around the globe.
