CheRight wing Fox News anchor Glenn Beck has just released his own history documentary about revolutionary movements. His goal in the film Revolutionary Holocaust, is to recast “fasicm” as part of left-wing politics. One of the figures he takes aim at is the Argentine doctor-turned revolutionary Che Guevara, who alongside Fidel Castro toppled the Batista regime in Cuba. Beck’s version of history casts Che as a racist, oppressive, terrorist not unlike the Taliban or Al Qaeda. But even Fox News is unlikely to be able to stem the on-going tidal wave of Che-mania that started in the 60s and has been going strong ever since. The iconic image of Che based on the photograph by Cuban photographer Alberto Korda is seen on countless posters, T-shirts, murals, and these days, consumer products like water bottles, children’s clothing, and even beer. In Poland, Che’s image was recently banned, and citizens can now be fined or arrested for sporting it. While some struggle to bind him to his historical context, others celebrate his transcendence, appreciating him as a symbol of revolution. In their groundbreaking new documentary, “Chevolution”, Trisha Ziff and Luis Lopez explore the history of Korda’s image by which we know Che today, and examine the reasons why it became so popular. Chevolution features Korda’s daughter Dianna Diaz, and his student Jose Figueroa, as well as actors Antonio Banderas and Gael Gercia Bernal.

Films about Che Guevara have always been popular like the 2004 Motorcycle Diaries. In December 2008, the acclaimed film maker Steven Soderbergh dramatized the life of Che Guevara in a two-part bio-pic starring Benecio del Toro as Che. Shot in a cinema-verite style, the first half called Argentine, focuses on Guevara’s experiences in Cuba and the revolution, while part two called Guerilla, follows Che’s attempt to bring revolution to Bolivia and his eventual death.
