Eric Drooker The First Earth Day

Back in the day on April 22nd, 1970, the United States celebrated Earth Day for the very first time. The brainchild of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, the observation held forty years ago was conceived as a ‘teach-in’ meant to inspire awareness and action on issues critical to the health of the environment. The response to the first Earth Day was immense as an estimated twenty million people from coast to coast participated in marches, rallies and educational events held at schools and universities. The impact of the massive outpouring of concern has been measured by the many and important legislative efforts passed since the first Earth Day. In the months that followed, the Environmental Protection Agency was formed to address and regulate pollution. The Clean Air Act was also passed that same year and the Clean Water Act became law just two years later.

Ten years after the first Earth Day, Nelson wrote in reflection, “We disregard the needs of our ecosystem at our mortal peril. That was the great lesson of Earth Day. It must never be forgotten.”

For Uprising, this is your truth professa’ saying it’s no mystery why they conceal our people’s history
