winogradHaving once introduced herself as “the best Republican in the Democratic Party,” Congresswoman Jane Harman of California’s 36th district may now regret those words. Harman, the second wealthiest member of Congress, faces a stiff challenge for her seat this year from community activist Marcy Winograd, co-founder of the LA Chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America. In 2006 Winograd first went up against Harman, garnering nearly 40% of the vote in the primary election. Recently at the California Democratic Convention in Los Angeles, Winograd challenged the party’s endorsement of Harman, leading to an impromptu debate between the two candidates. Jane Harman has long upset progressives with her so-called Blue-Dog credentials especially on foreign policy issues, including strong early support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, an aggressive stand on Iran, and unconditional support for the state of Israel. She was a proponent of using warrantless wiretapping through the NSA under President Bush, and made the controversial move to pressure the New York Times not to break its story. However, on domestic issues Harman has supported universal healthcare, women’s reproductive rights and access to abortions, LGBT rights, and stem cell research.
