Immigration in Arizona and Beyond
A teenage Mexican boy was shot and killed by US border agents this week in an incident that has sparked angry words from the Mexican government. The fourteen year old Sergio Adrian Hernandez Güereca was on Mexican land apparently throwing rocks at Border Patrol agents when he was shot from across the border with Texas. An anonymous source told Fox News that the boy was a known juvenile smuggler. The event highlights the high death rate on the US-Mexico border, an often over-looked context in the discussion about immigration. As outrage continues to mount across the country over Arizona’s draconian anti-immigrant law SB 1070, the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday voted to file a court brief supporting a coalition that is seeking to overturn SB 1070 on legal grounds. Los Angeles joins a growing number of city Councils across the country that have either passed resolutions against the law or are ending contracts with Arizona. They include San Francisco, West Hollywood, and Oakland here in California, as well as New York city, Washington DC, Austin, TX, Boston, MA, St. Paul, MN, Seattle, WA, and Hartford, CT, among others. Demonstrations around the country against the law are on-going, and undocumented students in particular, have in recent weeks organized courageous acts of civil disobedience in favor of the DREAM Act which would allow them a chance at citizenship through higher education or military service.
