KPFK Fund Drive – Day 14

Listen to the entire program

fuel the filmThe company that owned the Deepwater Horizon rig which exploded in April triggering the worst environmental disaster in US history, is criticizing the Obama Administration’s 6 month moratorium on offshore oil drilling in deep waters. Transocean owned the rig which was operated by the UK-based oil giant BP. Its attorneys complained that the moratorium was unprecedented and could be “economically devastating.” Meanwhile, President Obama has also pushed BP into creating a $20 billion escrow fund which the government will use to pay claims for damages from the oil spill. In last week’s hearing in the House on the spill, Republican congressman Joe Barton called the $20 billion a “shakedown” by the Obama administration and also characterized it as a “slush fund” and then went on to apologize to BP. The oil is still flowing underwater and it is estimated that two relief wells currently being dug to stop the flow could be completed by August. Public outrage over the spill is still high. Just this morning in London, activists from the environmental group Greenpeace interrupted an address by a BP executive to the World National Oil Companies Congress. Oil executives from all over the world will be donning tuxedoes for a gala dinner and awards ceremony tonight.

We spend the hour examining the dangers of oil production and consumption, and alternatives to oil, through the lens of a brand new, award winning documentary Fuel created by pioneering bio-fuel enthusiast, Josh Tickell.

You used the gasoline. You demanded the oil. No Administration successfully sues BP. The Gulf has been a polluted, oil laden mess for a hundred years. No reason to worry. Democratic incumbents are safe. BP is in control. The People of the United States exist to consume oil. What’s the problem? Your plane and car got you to the environmentalists awards dinner. So what if there’s a little muck in the Gulf?
