KPFK Fund Drive – Day 20
Listen to the entire program
Noam Chomsky is an MIT professor of Linguistics and a harsh critic of American domestic and foreign policy. His wide-ranging criticisms have made him an enemy of the powerful, and a beloved intellectual for generations of progressives. In his eighties, he continues to travel extensively, lecture widely, and write prolifically. Chomsky’s latest book, Hope and Prospects, explores a range of issues including the financial bailouts, Iraq and Afghanistan, American-Israeli policies, and the growing gap between North and South. Chomsky not only offers readers keen insight into the most pressing issues of today, he also looks at current movements and political developments that give him hope for a better tomorrow. Recently KPFA programmer Sasha Lilley sat down with him to explore his personal philosophy and how it applies to his work. Sasha Lilley also spoke with the late Howard Zinn and her conversations with both these progressive intellectuals is captured on a brand new DVD produced by PM Press called Theory and Practice: Conversations with Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn.
Historian Howard Zinn is best known for his People’s History of the United States, a book which sold over a million copies and changed the way many of us view American history. Zinn died on January 27 of this year at the age of 87 and is mourned by millions across the country and world. He was a writer, activist, playwright, and author and taught at Boston University. His experiences in World War II left him convinced of the superiority of non-violent civil disobedience as a way to achieve change. Zinn marched for civil rights and motivated new generations of people during his years teaching at places like Spelman College. His work has inspired countless histories, as well as a documentary, We the People.
