Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Holds Back Recommending Elena Kagan
The vote on Elena Kagan’s Supreme Court Nomination has been postponed by one week. Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee successfully delayed the vote when senior member Sen. Jeff Sessions granted that it be moved from Tuesday July 13, to Tuesday July 20. Although Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy feels that the postponement will make no difference to the outcome of the vote, Republican senators hope to dissuade several moderate committee members from voting Kagan into office within the coming week. Meanwhile, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law released a report yesterday analyzing Kagan’s position on issues of racial justice by examining her past work and legal opinions. If approved, Kagan will replace the seat vacated by Justice John Paul Stevens, who reliably voted in favor of expanding the civil rights of Americans.
