arizonaArizona’s anti-immigration legislation SB1070 has spurred action from supporters and opponents even before it was signed into law in late April. In spite of international condemnation and a pending federal lawsuit, SB1070 is set to go into effect on July 29th. Polls show that in many states support for the legislation is strong, and many candidates running for office in November are using it as a lightning-rod to garner support. Even Democrats are worried that the federal lawsuit will hurt their party during mid-term elections. A Quinnipiac University poll this week found that 47% of Pennsylvanians said they would adopt similar legislation for their state. Maryland Republican candidate for Governor Robert Erlich Jr. is criticizing the federal lawsuit as he stumps for office. And Michigan’s current Attorney General and Republican candidate for Governor, Mike Cox, has made it public that he will draft a legal brief in support of SB1070, and he has called on other State Attorneys General to sign it. But community organizing against SB1070 has not slowed in recent weeks. Here in Los Angeles, the group Todos Somos Arizona – We Are All Arizona – is holding a town hall meeting this Sunday at the Shatto Recreation Center. Topics to be discussed include immigrant rights, racial profiling and the law, and upcoming actions.

Guest: Patricia Torres, a member of the May 6th Collective, formed in order to address the increasing capacities of enforcement and terrorism that the state is inflicting on communities of color, and INCITE! LA Women, Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People of Color Against Violence. She is also an Urban Planning PhD student at UCLA, Hamid Khan is the Executive Director of the South Asian Network and occasional KPFK host

The Town hall meeting will take place on Sunday July 18th at 2 pm at Shatto Recreation Center, 3191 W 4th Street, LA CA 90020. Childcare and refreshments will be provided.
