Voices of the Unemployed – A Special Report by Margaret Zhou

UnemploymentFormer Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan warned yesterday that there is a “pause” in the economic recovery touted by Wall Street so that it feels like a “quasi-recession.” Greenspan speculated that if home prices continued to decline it would lead to what’s called a “double-dip” recession. He did acknowledge that the benefit of any economic recovery in recent months was enjoyed primarily by corporations and America’s wealthiest families, and predicted that unemployment was likely to remain high through the end of the year. For analysts, pundits, and financial reporters, the word unemployment is just one statistical metric of the health of the economy. For the vast majority of Americans unemployment changes everything. Economic recovery has little to do with stock values, and everything to do with simply having a steady paycheck. Uprising intern Margaret Zhou recently spoke with people here in Los Angeles, struggling to find jobs. She files this exclusive report on unemployment today.
