Dolores Huerta on Her Life and Legacy
Dolores Huerta, the co-founder of United Farm Workers, and its current Secretary Treasurer, turned 80 this year. Working closely with the legendary Cesar Chavez to organize farmworkers in the 1960s, she helped win better working conditions, launched the grape boycott, lobbied against toxic pesticides and their effects on farmers, negotiated contracts, and much more. Dolores Huerta has spent nearly 60 years of her life organizing for progressive change, becoming involved in the feminist movement, the labor movement, the immigrant rights movement and more. She has been arrested more than 20 times for acts of non-violent civil disobedience. Moments before he was shot, Robert Kennedy credited Huerta with helping him win the 1968 Democratic Nomination. The mother of 11 children, and grandmother to 14 children, the tireless activist is currently the President and founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation which supports grassroots community organizing and promotes popular education. On Friday, to honor Dolores Huerta on her 80th birthday, there will be a major concert at the Greek Theater called Weaving Movements Together headlined by Carlos Santana and featuring Lila Downs, Zack De La Rocha, Pete Escovedo, MArtin Sheen, Danny Glover, Ed Begley Jr, Benjamin Bratt, and many others.
