The Right Hook – 08/25/10
The Right Hook, a weekly segment which covers the machinations of the right wing, from the Republican Party to the Tea Party Patriots, and beyond. By Chris Bennett
Glenn Beck will be doing his best Dr. Martin Luther King impersonation this Saturday as he kicks off his 8-28 “Restoring Hope” rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. August 28th happens to be the 47th anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Teabaggers and Beck-heads not familiar with Washington D. C. now have a helpful guide to the city. Posted on a state of Maine’s Tea Party website is a helpful Metro guidemap for Beck’s followers who may have to use the government subsidized underground railroad. The guide warns ralliers to stick to “Bethesda, Arlington (preferably north Arlington), Crystal City, Fall Church, Annandale, or Alexandria, or in DC only in northwest DC west (i.e. larger street numbers) of 14th or 16th streets or if on Capitol Hill only in SE Capitol Hill (zip 20003) between 1st and 8th streets, not farther our than 8th (e.g. 9th, 10th, etc.) (Or stay on the Mall and at the various monuments).” By sticking to the narrow sliver of Tea Party approved land in DC, Beck rallyers will miss some of the nation’s most valued treasures: The National Archives, where the Constitution rests– reachable by the Green or Yellow lines; and the Washington National’s major league park is on the Green line. Tea Partiers may not know their way around the Constitution, but given their frequent protests in the capital, they should know their way around D.C. by now.
Jane Mayer has written in the latest issue of the New Yorker about Tea Party rainmakers David and Charles Koch. The Koch brothers are the money behind many right wing and Tea Party propaganda organs. After helping to create the Cato and Mercatus think tanks, the Koch’s decided they needed something a bit more grassroots. In 1980’s, the Kochs helped start Citizens for a Sound Economy and gave $7.9 Million between 1986 and 1993. Citizens for a Sound Economy later split into FreedomWorks and Americans for Prosperity which support Tea Party activists across the country. David Koch has given at least $5 Million to Americans for Prosperity, and once ran on the Libertarian ticket in the V.P. slot. The late renowned conservative William F. Buckley, Jr. assessed the Libertarian movement as “Anarcho-Totalitarianism.”
For a snapshot of just where we are right now in post-racial America, check out the YouTube video of the African American man who happened to walk through an angry protest against the Park 51 Islamic Cultural Center in lower Manhattan. The man wore a white shirt, sported a white doo-rag styled piece of Under Armour headgear, and wore a red, white, and blue medallion around his neck. The crowd shouted “No Mosque, No Way” at the man who appeared calm but surprised as he said “I’m not even Muslim”. Two separate polls last week showed that more and more Americans believe president Obama is a Muslim. Franklin Graham, the late reverend Billy Graham’s son, said the president carried “the Muslim Seed”. Americans may want to ask themselves, If Obama is a Muslim, why is he killing so many of them with unmanned drone strikes, Special Ops teams, and assassination squads?
