BP’s Deep Dark Secrets
Aspects of the BP oil spill continue to make news. This week it was reported that some Gulf residents began receiving emergency payments for loss of income, but over 90% of all claims files were rejected for lack of proper documentation. The Gulf Coast is currently under a hurricane warning, and until the storm passes, BP will not be able to continue its efforts to replace the blow-out preventor on its Deepwater Horizon rig. However media coverage of the environmental damage is vanishing at about the same rate as the visibility of the oil on Gulf coast beaches and the water’s surface. The nightly news is no longer filled with images of oil soaked birds and dolphin carcasses, and there have been headlines proclaiming that the oil has effectively disappeared. But these assessments simply reflect a shallow comprehension of the nature of oil, ecosystems, and the use of massive amounts of chemical dispersants. The most recent edition of Mother Jones Magazine details the many ways BP’s oil will wreak havoc on the entire marine ecosystem for decades, and how the company has managed to limit its liability.
