Robert Jensen on Glenn Beck: Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid – And then Get Organized
Just days after his Washington DC “restoring honor” rally, Fox News Shock-Jock-turned-Televangelist Glenn Beck has launched an online political blog called “The Blaze.” Beck himself describes it as a site that will publish “breaking news, original reporting, insightful opinions, and engaging videos about the stories that matter most.” In a followup to our Tuesday interview with analyst Chip Berlet about Glenn Beck we turn now to Robert Jensen, Professor of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. Writing for the Texas Observer, Jensen points out that while Glenn Beck is willfully ignorant and skillfully deceitful, his combination of arrogance and humility, and his call to transcend politics by turning to religion may resonate with far more Americans that we may realize. With the upcoming midterm elections in November threatening to change the partisan makeup of Congress, how can Progressives organize around important issues of war, poverty, unemployment, and the environment?

Thanks for this! I’m particularly glad to see academics speaking out about Beck’s rhetoric, given the prominent role he plays in the current anti-intellectualism in American culture.
