The Right HookThe Right Hook, a weekly segment which covers the machinations of the right wing, from the Republican Party to the Tea Party Patriots, and beyond. By Chris Bennett

Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, who plans to have his congregation burn Qurans on September 11th as a protest against Al Qaeda, is now praying over the wisdom of his decision. General David Petraeus warned pastor Jones that the Quran burning could endanger U.S. troops in the field. Indeed, the rumor of the book burning has already sparked demonstrations in the streets of Kabul where protesters on Saturday burned Pastor Jones in effigy along with a U.S. flag. Jones says his burning is aimed at “the radical element of Islam.” But, as the author of a new book entitled Islam is of the Devil (copyright 2010), Jones is clearly a member of the radical element of Charismatic Christianity. Or, he is a member of the tribe of authors who try to sell books by ginning up a publicity stunt. You can buy Islam is of the Devil online, along with other gear to help you “take a stand for God and fight on the front lines of the greatest spiritual battle of our age.” Islam is of the Devil coffee cups are only $14.99. Tee-shirts are $15.99.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer on Friday admitted that she misspoke when she said in June that beheaded bodies were found in the desert region of the U.S./Mexico border. Last April, Brewer signed SB 1070 which is the harshest anti-immigration bill in decades. A week ago, during her debate with Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard, Brewer refused to recant or even address the statement and simply walked away from reporters, Sharron Angle-style. Six county medical examiners from Arizona say they have never seen any beheaded bodies. Arizonans were demanding a clarification from Brewer for months before her Friday recantation. But according to the Arizona Daily Star, Brewer said the only reason she agreed to the debate with Goddard was to secure $1.7 Million in public funds for her campaign. Meanwhile mainstream media seem to be fixated on her embarrassing loss for words during last week’s debate. Brewer is at least clear on one thing: she announced that she will not appear in any more debates with her opponent.

The NAACP, in conjunction with Think Progress and Media Matters has launched a Tea Party Tracking website, www.teapartytracker.org. The site aims to monitor “racism and other forms of extremism within the Tea Party movement.” The right wing is in a fluster and scrambling to find a response. According to Think Progress, Matt Tibbe, CEO of Freedom Works, says his organization will launch the “Diverse Tea” campaign in order to showcase people of various colors and ethnicities within the Tea Party. According to Tibbe, the campaign will start this week or next. Or, as soon as the Tea Party can find any African American, Latino, or Jewish Tea Party leaders willing to represent “Diverse Tea.”

If you’ve been following the so-called Ground-Zero Mosque story, you may have stumbled on images of a “decommissioned missile” that anti-Muslim protesters have used as a prop in their demonstrations. The protesters against New York’s Park 51 Islamic Cultural Center have adorned the missile with a sign reading: “Ground Zero Mosque – Preying on Freedom”. Just where do you get a decommissioned missile from these days anyway? An advertising agency called JetAngel. Owner Arye Sachs has donated two of the missiles to the Park 51 protest effort thus far. Sachs has his own anti-Islamic rant posted on a website sponsored by “RegulateThem.com” whose logo is a set of cross-hairs on a target. Their slogan is “Don’t Call Us. There’s Nothing to Talk About.”
