Boots Riley on his Music and Politics

Boots RileyFamed hip hop star Boots Riley of the Coup has teamed up with Tom Morello, former guitarist with Rage Against the Machine, and Audioslave, to produce a new EP as the Street Sweeper Social Club. The Ghetto Blaster EP was released this past August and features a cover version of MIA’s Paper Planes from the soundtrack to the film Slumdog Millionaire. Ghetto Blaster follows an album released last year by Street Sweeper Social Club. Riley and Morello describe their band as a “rock, rap group” that plays “revolutionary party jams.” Boots Riley, contextualized their music saying “This is a time when the working class is being fleeced left and right. More families will be homeless and more people will be jobless. They’ll need something to listen to on their ipods while storming Wall Street.” Boots Riley was a community organizer in his hometown of Oakland California, before gaining national fame as the lead band member of The Coup, a seminal hip-hop group with several critically acclaimed albums. Boots Riley and Tom Morello will bring their Street Sweeper Social Club act to the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles next Monday November 8th.

The Roxy Theater located at 9009 West Sunset Blvd. West Hollywood, CA. More info at www.TheRoxyonSunset.com.

This EP is not their debut as you make it sound. Their sled titled debut LP was most excellent, though not nearly as good as seeing the band before the album dropped while they toured with Nine Inch Nails. Good post nonetheless.
