In Play Again, Kids Addicted to Digital Media Connect With Nature
Retailers reported that this year electronics purchases were up 3% compared to last year’s Black Friday, post-Thanksgiving shopping mania. Fifty seven percent of shoppers last week purchased some type of electronics, making it the second most popular product after clothing. Of those, 39% bought video game accessories, 37% bought portable MP3 or digital media players, 36% bought video game consoles, 34% bought digital cameras, 29% bought computers, 26% bought televisions, and 24% bought laptop computers. Our daily exposure to digital media is unprecedented. The new generation of children who don’t know the world that existed before the internet, are especially vulnerable to the overwhelmingly digital media diet. A new documentary called Play Again, featured in this year’s Artivist Film Festival, explores what’s at stake for our collective future as young people increasingly lose touch with nature and experience their lives and relationships almost exclusively through a touch screen and headphones. Centered on a group of young kids with serious attachments to video games, cell phones, and TV, Play Again offers a glimpse into what is possible when children are reconnected to nature.
