AFFRM Offers New Model for Black Indie Filmmakers
A new feature film by Ava DuVernay called I Will Follow will release on March 11th in theaters across the country and is the first offering from a brand new non-profit group called AFFRM. AFFRM stands for the African American Film Festival Releasing Movement. Writer and Director DuVernay, a veteran of the film industry, is also AFFRM’s Founder. Ava DuVernay spoke with Uprising host Sonali Kolhatkar on Wednesday March 9th 2011.

More power to Ava and I wish her success. But I need to adopt a wait-n-see attitude to make sure that AAFRM is more than just a publicity thing for “I Will Follow.” Point: there are a lot of accomplished indie filmmakers out there with multiple projects who could have benefited from this type of exposure/release. Not sure what happened in the selection process, or if there was one.
